No wonder we can feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it all. But take a deep breath, because you are not alone, and there are ways to tame the overwhelm and reclaim control of your day.


Understanding the Why:


Feeling overwhelmed is more than just having a lot to do. It is also about the emotional reaction to the burden. Maybe you need more hours in the day, or perhaps you're under continual pressure to achieve in all areas. These feelings are valid. Remember that our bodies are also changing; hormonal alterations can sap our energy and make it difficult to focus.


Taming the Beast:


Let's get down to business! Here are some strategies for dealing with overwhelming situations:


  • Prioritize ruthlessly: not all tasks are equal. Make a list of everything you need to complete, then prioritize the top three most critical tasks for the day. Focus on those first, and leave the less urgent issues for later or assign them if possible. Remember that "perfect" is the opposite of "done."


  • Accept the power of "no": We've all been conditioned to be helpers and fixers. However, it is acceptable to decline requests that might clutter your plate. A simple "I appreciate you thinking of me, but I don't have the bandwidth right now" is fine.

  • Schedule your self-care: You are not a machine! Feeling your best allows you to tackle everything else more effectively. Schedule time for exercise, hobbies you enjoy, and relaxation (yes, schedule it!).

  • Batch similar tasks: Multitasking is a myth. Instead, group similar tasks together. For example, answer all your emails in one designated block instead of letting them interrupt your workflow throughout the day.

  • Embrace technology (kind of): There are amazing apps out there to help you stay organized and on top of things. Explore to-do list apps, calendar apps, or even voice recorders to capture those fleeting thoughts.
